STREAMING HEADLINES

Peacock Is Raising Prices for the Third Year in a Row

FAQ - Download Images to View

Effective July 23rd, Peacock is charging new subscribers $11 per month for the ad-supported Premium plan, which is an increase of almost 40% over the $8 per month it currently costs to subscribe. The price for the ad-free Premium Plus subscription will rise from $14 to $17 per month. Existing Peacock customers will see these rates go into effect in their first billing cycle on or after August 22.

This is the biggest price increase Peacock has ever rolled out at one time since the streamer launched in 2020, and it means that Peacock will have one of the most expensive ad-supported plan of any streaming service, priced higher per month than Netflix ($8), Disney+ ($10), HBO Max ($10), and Prime Video ($9).

Max Officially Changes Name Back to HBO Max

FAQ - Download Images to View

Apparently, it’s a streaming platform’s prerogative to change its mind. Warner Bros. Discovery announced on July 9th that its streaming platform, Max, has officially reverted to its former name, HBO Max. The rebranding marks a return to the name the service carried when it first launched in May 2020, before its controversial shift to Max in 2023.

The 2023 decision to drop HBO from the platform’s name was intended to distinguish the streaming service’s broader content library — including Discovery’s reality shows, family-friendly programming, and Warner Bros. films — from the premium, adult-oriented HBO brand. However, the shift to Max was met with widespread confusion among consumers and criticism from industry observers.

Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2, and Minions

PG — It’s time to enjoy a triple feature! The first in this animated film franchise, Despicable Me, came out in 2010. This film also introduced Minions, Gru’s goofy yellow pill-shaped helpers, as well as his nemesis, Vector.

The story continues in Despicable Me 2 (2013), where Gru trades villainy for devoted fatherhood. He’s recruited by the Anti-Villain League to vanquish a new supervillain, Eduardo/El Macho (Benjamin Bratt), and teams up with agent Lucy Wilde (Kristen Wiig), who becomes his romantic interest. Minions (2015) is the Despicable Me prequel. In 1960s New York, the Minions join up with Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock), a supervillain out to snatch Queen Elizabeth II’s crown.
